The process of Master/Disciple& Devotee Relationship to be eligible to receive Grace of Master (Guru Kripa- A most Vital Force in one’s life).

Advantages of having a Guru:

The Guru Shows the Path. A guru shows the path of enlightenment to seekers.
The guru is both a formal teacher and a spiritual preceptor. He is a storehouse of spiritual energy, which he can transmit to others. He helps the aspirant to polish his inner self till it reflects the light of truth. Guru denotes darkness (ignorance) and Guru denotes the removal of that darkness.

The word Guru has two other meanings.

In the first one,” GU” signifies guna titha (one who has transcended the three gunas)

And “Ru” signifies the formless aspect (one who has grasped that).

Gur means heavy or weighty, signifying the weight of the guru's wisdom, which can benefit others. The guru is both a formal teacher and a spiritual preceptor. He is a storehouse of spiritual energy, which he can transmit to others. He helps the aspirant to polish his inner self till it reflects the light of truth. In the Shirdi Sai Satcharita a seeker asks Shirdi Baba: "Where to go?" Baba replies: "High up". The seeker then asks: "How to go there?" Baba answers: "Take a guide, he will take you straight and make you avoid the ditches and wild beasts in the jungle".

Even avatars like Rama and Krishna subjected themselves to the tutelage of worthy gurus like Vashishta and Sandipani. The guru-shishya parampara honours the teacher as God and promotes reverence for vidya (knowledge). It inculcates humility in the student and respect and gratitude in him for the dispenser of knowledge. Other noble virtues like discipline, dedication, sense of duty, sacrifice and compassion also evolve with the guru's help. A true guru guides you on the spiritual path to salvation. He promotes your furtherance on the God ward path. He is also the one who grants great inspiration to good works.

'“Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwara,
Gurur Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmaye Shri Guruvai Namaha.”

In this sloka the guru is compared with the trinity of Gods - Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara - because a sincere guru has to take on all the three functions of the trinity - creation (of good qualities), sustenance (of higher nature) and destruction (of negative qualities).

The best guru dakshina is to adhere to the guru's words. Once, a guru sent his pupil to collect dry 'useless' leaves from a forest as guru dakshina. The disciple searched long and hard but was unsuccessful. Whenever he tried to gather the dry leaves he would be stopped by forest folk collecting them for fuel to heat water, humus for plants, for making patravalis (plates) or for preparing herbal medicines. He went back disappointed, without the guru dakshina. His guru said that the knowledge he had gained of how 'nothing was useless', was his guru dakshina, and his purpose in sending the student to the forest was to teach him that. By the gurus' grace - guru krupa - everything auspicious is obtained.

However, the path is neither THAT EASY nor IMPOSSIBLE

& If you Study the word "IMPOSIBLE" it contains POSSIBLE) i.e. I'M -POSSIBLE. The disciple has to offer his ego at the guru's feet and accept his inscrutable methods of instruction. The guru's words may not be an explicit command (Sri Ramana Maharashi hardly uttered a word to his shishyas) - it may simply involve a subtle fine-tuning to the natural requirements of a purified conscience. As Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, the ultimate goal of the guru-shishya relationship is to make the latter attain the heights of self-awareness, whereby dependence on all external forms - even that of the guru is shed, and the Parama Guru or the Self is gloriously revealed within.

Guru Purnima is celebrated every year on a full moon night in honour of Veda Vyasa, the Loka Guru. The full moon symbolizes the cool clear light of the guru's intellect which alone can dispel ignorance. Guru Veda Vyasa has arranged and classified the Vedas in their present order and made them available for the benefit of the mankind- Hence he is called Veda Vyasa.

What is the importance of Guru's grace (Gurukrupa)? Path of Guru’s Grace (Gurukrupayoga).

1. Meaning the word krupa has been derived from the root krup which means to be compassionate. Krupa means compassion, initiation (anugraha) or a blessing (Prasad). Thus Gurukrupayoga is the path in which by means of the Guru’s grace (gurukrupa) the embodied soul is united with God.

2. Importance of the Path of Guru’s grace. In this path a seeker learns how to acquire the Guru’s grace at the earliest, bypassing all other paths instead of wasting several years fol¬lowing various paths of spiritual practice. Consequently it is only natural that one makes rapid spiritual progress by following this path.

3. Importance of the Guru’s grace (Gurukrupa) ‘One comprehends the unmanifest (nirguna) with intellect and the manifest (satguna) with spiritual love (priti). This intellect is a subtle form of the intellect acquired by studying the scriptures. This intellect destroys the anadi (one without a beginning) illusion. From the beginning of the state of the embodied soul (jivadasha) each one has the illusion (misconcept) that “I am distinct from Brahman”. By studying the scriptures one realises by means of his intellect that “I am not distinct from Brahman”. However later he begins to feel, “If I am not different from Brahman then how is it that I do not experience it?” and thus another illusion develops. This illusion having an origin is described as the adi illusion. This adi illusion is destroyed solely by the grace of the Guru. This means that on account of the Guru’s grace the love of the manifest (satguna prem) and the devotion of the manifest (satguna bhakti) derived through satsang (holy company) transform his love, that is convert love into spiritual love which is devoid of expectation and thus the form of the manifest itself vanishes. As a result, the notions originating from relative knowledge that the manifest has a form and the unmanifest is formless are destroyed. When relative knowledge gets transformed into absolute knowledge the difference between the manifest and the unmanifest with regard to form, no longer persists. If rela¬tive knowledge were to be true then its awareness would not have been destroyed. This awareness of relative knowledge that is pratyay itself is the adi illusion.

Once devotion of the manifest begins, actual realisation (sakshatkar) that the manif¬est is really unmanifest Bliss occurs, the knowledge of the unmanifest that is thinking that the unmanifest is different from the manifest dissolves and one experiences that “I am Brahman” that is one experiences non-duality. Hence, saints term the unmanifest as the most subtle among spoken topics (vachyansha) and the manifest as the ultimate target (lakshyansha), that is The Lord. Since scholars have no experience of satsang, this concept is not acceptable to them.

Rameshvar Bhatt who was in¬strumental in immersing the holy verses of Saint Tukaram in water attained Absoluteness (Purnatva) with the grace of Saint Tukaram alone.’ - Who dwells in my heart? I would never realise that without the Guru’s grace. - Saint Bhaktaraj.

1. One of our duties as human beings is to avail ourselves of every opportunity to do good to others. The poor can serve others by their loyal work to the country and the rich by their wealth to help the poor. Those who are influential can use their influence to better the condition of the lowly. That way we can keep alive in our hearts a sense of social service.

2. Man by himself cannot create even a blade of grass. We will be guilty of gross ingratitude if we do not offer first to God what we eat or wear - only the best and choicest should be offered to Him.

3. Life without love is a waste. Everyone should cultivate "Prema" or love towards all human beings, bird and beast.

4. Wealth amassed by a person whose heart is closed to charity, is generally dissipated by the inheritors: but the family of philanthropists will always be blessed with happiness.

5. A person who has done a meritorious deed will lose the resulting merit if he listens to the praise of others or himself boasts of his deeds.

6. It will do not good to grieve over what has happened. If we learn to discriminate between good and evil, that will guard us from falling into the evil again.

7. We should utilise to good purpose, the days of our life-time. We should engage ourselves in acts which will contribute to the welfare of others rather than to our selfish desires.

8. We should perform duties that have been prescribed for our daily life and also be filled with devotion to God.

9. One attains one's goal by performance of one's duties.

10. Jnana is the only solvent of our troubles and sufferings.

Now a very important verse on Guru:-

"Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu Guru Devo Maheshwara
Guru Sakshath Parambrahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha."

“Guru is creator Brahma; Guru is preserver Vishnu; Guru is also the destroyer Siva and he is the source of the Absolute. I offer all my salutations to the Guru”



What is the nature of Guru's grace?

It is beyond thought and word. Then how can it be said that the devotee realises his true being by virtue of the Guru's grace? It is like the elephant which wakes up on seeing a lion in its dream. Even as the elephant wakes up at the mere sight of the lion, so too is it certain that the disciple wakes up from the sleep of ignorance to the knowledge of Real. It is true and certain. Ramana Maharshi The grace of the Guru is like an ocean. If one comes with a cup he will only get a cupful. It is no use complaining of the niggardliness of the ocean. The bigger the vessel the more one will be able to carry. It is entirely up to him. Ramana Maharshi Rain-water falling upon the roof of a house flows down to the ground through spouts shaped grotesquely like the tiger's head. One gets the impression that the water flows from the tiger's mouth, but in reality it descends from the sky. In the same way the holy teachings that come from the mouth of godly men (Gurus) seem to be uttered by those men themselves, while in reality they proceed from God. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

When Guru will get his due status....I am pessimistic about it. Pessimism is the art of lying that everything is wrong with the world when everything is not really wrong, but then... Optimism is the art of lying that everything is right with the world when everything is not really right. Ignorance is the mire of humanity; the one who rescues us from Avidya or Ignorance is Guru. Gu is Ignorance and Ru is light, the remover of ignorance. The medium of removal is Supreme Spiritual knowledge; the mediator is the Guru. He sheds light where there is darkness. Since Guru is the purveyor of spiritual knowledge and the dispeller of spiritual darkness, he is second only to Brahman.

There are variations in the interpretation of Guru. Considered in its parts:-
G, R, U.

The G has a function of granting of Siddhis (supernatural powers);
the R has the function of expunging the sins;
The U portrays the latent unmanifested energy of Vishnu.

The path of Guru is Guru-Krupa-Yoga (Guru-compassion-Yoga), the Path of Guru's Grace. Hymns by Adi Sankara to Guru Is a, the Supreme Lord, having been pleased with Bhakti and Vaidika Lakshana of his votaries in their very many previous births, incarnates out of compassion as Guru in a living and breathing form, inculcates in them the knowledge of the ultimate Reality and helps them cross the ocean of misery of this earthly existence.

Vaidika Laksana = Vedic marks = worship according to Vedic Scriptural injunctions. Tirumanthiram Verse 139: Illumination (of the soul) is to see the Holy Form of Guru, to chant Guru’s Holy name to hear Guru’s holy words, to reflect on the form of Guru. Guru is the intermediary between God and man; He is the representative of God on this earth; between God and Guru, Guru takes the precedence.

Verse 1: One's Sariram (body) may be of great form, Kalatram (wife) beautiful, dhanam (wealth) as big as Mount Meru;. If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail are that?

Verse 2: Wife, wealth, sons, grandsons, home and relatives: all these you may have. If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail are that?

Verse 3: Satravidya (Scriptural knowledge) may be on one's lips; one may be Kavitvadi (exponent of poetry); one may write good poetry and prose. If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail is that?

Verse 4: In foreign lands, I gain honor and fame; in my own country, I am blessed with wealth; I am of inimitable good conduct. If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail is that?

Verse 5: Kings and emperors adore his feet; but if the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail is that?

Verse 6: Virtue and generosity brought me fame and rewards from all over the world. If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail is that?

Verse 7: The mind does not dwell on Bhoga, Yoga, stallions and horses, the face of the beloved and riches; If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail is that?

Verse 8: my mind does abide in neither the forest, nor the house, nor the future accomplishments, nor the body, nor the precious. If the mind is not attached to the Lotus feet of the Guru, of what avail is that?

Verse 9: Man of virtue who studies this Guru Astakam (Octad on Guru), and whose mind abides in his sayings whether he is Yati (ascetic), Bhupati (Lord of the world), Brahmachari (student), or householder, realizes his desired goal of union with Brahman. Guru-disciple tradition should become more active for the protection of Dharma!

Gurupournima is the day to worship the Guru and to express complete gratitude for what we have received and have been receiving from Him. On this day, remembering the great Guru-disciple tradition, seekers from all faculties who represent the Sanatan Hindu culture and who preserve the Guru-disciple tradition worship the Guru. The Guru-disciple tradition is a gift of Sanatan Hindu culture to the world. The tradition is at the core of the system of imparting of knowledge and learning, in which the relationship of the one who imparts knowledge and the one who receives it are exemplary. The knowledge-giver does not shoulder the responsibility of imparting knowledge only, but also teaching the seeker life values. Here, the one who absorbs knowledge is not a student who learns for the sake of livelihood only, but is a seeker who learns with the aim of development of his knowledge. In our culture the concept of 'knowledge' is related to attainment of God. It is called the 'Supreme Knowledge', because only those who have the authority to do so - the Gurus - impart this knowledge! Words fail to describe the grandeur of a culture that boasts of worship of such a glorious Guru-disciple tradition! Despite this, Sanatan Hindu Dharma, which has given this unique gift to the world, is passing through testing times.

while worshipping the Guru on Guru-pournima, instead of expecting that 'I should get something', we should try to get the grace of the Guru to obtain necessary strength and intellect for the protection of the Dharma, which has handed down this splendid Guru-disciple tradition through generations. Jagadguru Bhagwan Sri Krushna said to His disciple Arjuna - "O Arjuna (i.e. seeker), get up with determination and fight to destroy the evil-doers." (Srimad-bhagvad Gita 2.37) The Guru Principle is active a 1000 times more on the day of Gurupournima. So the disciple gets more of Guru's grace.

“If we protect Dharma (Righteousness), Dharma will protect us”. With the same rule, if the traditions of Dharma do something for the protection of Dharma, they are not only protected but also promoted. If this happens the entire year, it will guarantee non-stop showering of Guru's grace. The Gurus in the gross form may be different, but the Principle is one. I pray at the Holy Feet of the Pujya Guruji that all seekers should get necessary strength and intellect to become pro-active for protection of Dharma and those who are already active, should continue to receive incessant flow of Guru's grace and “GUIDING LIGHTS”!

Swami Vivekananda (12th January 1863 - 4th July 1902), whose pre-monastic name was Narendranath Dutta, was one of the most famous and influential spiritual leaders of the philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga. He was the chief disciple of Ramkrushna Paramhans and the Founder of Ramkrushna Math and Ramakrushna Mission. He is also a major figure in the history of the Hindu reform movements. Since his childhood, he had questions about God and the presence of God. Narendra met Ramkrushna Paramhansa for the first time in November 1881. He asked Paramhansa the same question he had so often asked of others, "Mahashaya (Venerable Sir), have you seen God?" The instantaneous answer from Paramhansa was, "Yes, I see God, just as I see you here, only in a much intense sense. God can be realized." He went on, "One can see and talk to Him as I am seeing and talking to you. But who cares? People shed tears for their wife and children, for wealth or property, but who does so for the sake of God? If one weeps sincerely for Him, He surely manifests Himself." Narendra could feel that the words were honest and uttered from a deep experience. He started visiting Paramhansa frequently. At first he did not believe that such a plain man could have seen God, but gradually he started having faith in what Paramhansa said.

Though Narendra could not accept Paramhansa and his visions, he could not neglect Him either. It had always been in Narendra's nature to test something thoroughly before he could accept it. He tested Paramhansa to the maximum, but the master was patient, forgiving, humorous, and full of love. He never asked Narendra to abandon reason, and He faced all of Narendra's arguments and examinations with patience. In time, Narendra accepted Paramhansa whole-heartedly. While Ramkrushna Paramhans predominantly taught duality and Bhakti to His other disciples, He taught Narendra the Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of non-dualism.

During the course of five years of his training under Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Narendra was transformed from a restless, puzzled, impatient youth to a mature man who was ready to renounce everything for the sake of God-realisation. Swami Vivekanand was encouraged by a professor at Harvard University, to represent Hinduism in the 1893 'World Parliament of Religions' in Chicago. He was received well there, when he delivered a series of lectures. The audience arose in their seats and applauded loudly (for two minutes) when he started his first address with the famous words, "Sisters and brothers of America." A newspaper account described him as 'an orator by Divine right and undoubtedly the greatest figure at the Parliament.' Swami Vivekanand's arrival in the USA has been identified by many to mark the beginning of western interest in Hinduism, not as merely an exotic eastern oddity, but as a vital religious and philosophical tradition that actually had something important to teach the West. Swami Vivekananda belonged to that branch of Vedanta that held that no one can be truly free until all of us are. Even the desire for personal salvation has to be given up, and only tireless work for the salvation of others is the true mark of an enlightened person. Swami Vivekananda advised his followers to be Holy, unselfish and have faith. He encouraged the practice of Brahmacharya (celibacy). In one of the conversations with his childhood friend, he attributed his physical and mental strengths, eloquence to the practice of Brahmacharya. He left his body after a session of prayer at Belur Math. He was 39. The monks of the Math were convinced that he had attained mahasamadhi, as Ramakrushna Paramhans had predicted. His Punyatithi falls on 4th July. We pay obeisance to this invaluable son of Bharat.

"What Is the Central Purpose of Marriage? Duties of a Husband-AN IDEAL
HUSBAND & A RIGHTEOUS WIFE"

The two purposes of marriage are: the mutual support, both spiritual
and material, of man and wife; and bringing children into the world.
Marriage is a religious sacrament, a human contract and a civil
institution.

Through marriage, a man and a woman each fulfill their dharma,
becoming physically, emotionally and spiritually complete. He needs
her tenderness, companionship and encouragement, while she needs his
strength, love and understanding. Their union results in the birth of
children and the perpetuation of the human race.

Marriage is a three-fold state:

1. it is a sacrament,

2. A sacred contract

3. A divine institution.

As a sacrament, it is a spiritual union in which man and woman utter
certain vows one to another and thus bind themselves together for life
and for their souls' mutual benefit.

As a contract, it is a personal agreement to live together as husband
and wife, he to provide shelter, protection, sustenance, and she to
care for the home and bear and nurture their children.

As an institution, marriage is the lawful custom in society, bringing
stability to the family and the social order. Marriage is a jivayajna,
a sacrifice of each small self to the greater good of the family and
society.

The Vedas exclaim:-

I am he, you are she,

I am song, you are verse,

I am heaven, you are earth.

And we two shall here together dwell, becoming parents of children."


And now comes:-

What Are the Duties of a Husband?

It is the husband's duty, his purusha dharma, to protect and provide
for his wife and children. He, as head of the family, griheshvara, is
responsible for its spiritual, economic, physical, mental and
emotional security and well being by their physical, mental and emotional differences, the man is suited to work in the world and the woman to bear and raise their children in the home. The husband is, first, an equal participant in the
procreation and upbringing of the future generation. Second, he is the
generator of economic necessary for society and the immediate family.

The husband must be caring, understanding, masculine, loving,
affectionate, and an unselfish provider, to the best of his ability
and through honest means. He is well equipped physically and mentally
for the stress and demands placed upon him. When he performs his
dharma well, the family is materially and emotionally secure. Still,
he is not restricted from participation in household chores,
remembering that the home is the wife's domain and she is its
mistress.

The Vedas implore, "Through this oblation, which invokes prosperity,
may this bridegroom flourish anew; may he, with his manly energies,
flourish the wife they have brought to him. May he excel in strength,
excel in royalty! May this couple be inexhaustible in wealth that
bestows luster a thousand fold?"

The question is how far it is workable 100% in the present living
scenario wherein in many cases both husband and wife has to go for
work- doesn't matter make acceptable and meaningful compromises in the
keen interest of the whole family without compromising on values of

AN IDEAL HUSBAND AND A RIGHTIOUS WIFE


According to ancient Indian philosophy & heritage and AN IDEAL HUSBAND
AND A RIGHTIOUS WIFE (In Indian divine language i.e. in Sanskrit it is
referred to as Uthmapurushan and Dharma Pathni) makes a perfect couple
paving way for a healthy living and prosperous family. I find no
reason and justification why this concept cannot be accepted and
followed by ROW (No doubt many a country has begun to follow the
system in a snail's pace).The end result would be an ideal,
prosperous, healthy and a unique family on its path to progress,
prosperity and phenomenal growth.

A man (husband) has to lead and live a life filled with love, ethics,
cleanliness, faith, trust, good understanding and care for the good
cause and sake of his family. Have concern for each and every member
of his family without discrimination and perform his duties with care
and caution to reach the pinnacle of peace, prosperity and contentment
Being the head of the family he is responsible and accountable for the
overall development and growth of the family in an IDEAL manner. Ideal
is a sober word with soft meanings and man has to remain sober and
soft at all times during the course of his living.

The woman (wife) on the other hand is expected to assist the man in
performance of his duties as mentioned above, apart from performing
her duties in a rightful and righteous manner without causing even an
iota of damages to the sentiments and thoughts of one and all in the
family-herein ethics, love and divinity plays a vital role, to be
borne in mind at all times.

As a matter of fact, wife plays a lead role in the well being and
prosperity of the whole family (a traditionally accepted truth) but of
course in necessity in consultation and consent of the husband as she
is considered and accepted as Goddess of wealth and prosperity (known
as MAHALASHMI) and by following the traditionally prescribed way of
living (as mentioned above) nothing in the world can prevent her from
attaining the prosperity and well being of the family. The husband
being an ideal man should always extend his whole hearted support to
the wife to achieve her ultimate goal for the welfare and well being
of the family. In a nutshell it's a team effort and work, mixed with
ideal and righteous by the husband and wife.

How do you build and maintain an excellent future generation? The wife
(mother for children) plays an important role in this respect. As a
mother she holds more responsibility in bringing up the children in
the right manner with high values of Love higher values of Ethics and
highest values Living It should be begun at grass root level so that
the edifice of moral values, ethical values, values of dignity, self
respect, respect for others etc are instilled in the children from
early child-hood itself. It's not a short term assignment but a duty
extends for long time, and at all times she seeks the man's support
and guidance, it must be extended and accorded with out a second
thought. Righteous is a powerful word and to fulfill the powerful task
the woman has to be righteously powerful to perform and fulfill her
duties towards the family.

The relationship of man and woman (husband and wife) is so close knit
if not handled with duty bound, devotion and dedication ,will loosen
the close knit strings of relationship causing deterioration. Let the
purpose of living together of man and woman be fulfilled the way it
should be in accordance with the tradition, heritage and culture
surrounded by ethics and elegance always and let man and woman
together pave way for their own perfect living and to build an
excellent and exciting future generation.

Nature of Human Righteousness....

What Is the Nature of Human Righteousness?

Human law, or ashrama dharma, is the natural expression and maturing of the body, mind and emotions through four progressive stages of earthly life-

Student,
House Holder,
Elder Advisor
&
Religious solitaire.

The four ashramas are:-

"Stages of striving," in pursuit of the purusharthas:
Righteousness,
Wealth,
Pleasure and liberation.

Our first 24 years of life are a time of intense learning. Around age 12, we enter formally the brahmacharya ashrama and undertake the study and skills that will serve us in later life. From 24 to 48, in the grihastha ashrama, we work together as husband and wife to raise the family, increasing wealth and knowledge through our profession, serving the community and sustaining the members of the other three ashramas. In the vanaprastha ashrama, from 48 to 72, slowly retiring from public life, we share our experience by advising and guiding younger generations. After age 72, as the physical forces wane, we turn fully to scripture, worship and yoga. This is the sannyasa ashrama, which differs from the formal life of ochre-robed monks.

Thus, our human righteousness is a natural awakening, expression, maturing and withdrawal from worldly involvement. The Vedas say:-

ASPECTS OF IGNORANCE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BONDAGE OF THE WORLDLY LIFE.

It goes without saying that “Viveka Chudamni” is one of the masterly work on advaitic thought Sri. Adi Sankaracharya, and this deal with the subject matter. Viveka Chudamani deals with the nature of the bondage and analyses the ways and means to get rid of it for attainment of ultimate liberation.

The two powers of ignorance can be described as ‘avarana’ (veiling) and ‘vikshepa’ (projection). All problems of human life arise from identifying the non-self with the self, more the identification more the bondage leading to bindings, and man gets bound by his own deeds, just like the caterpillar by the threads of its cocoon. There can be and there is only one reality that is ‘self’. The entire world and its objects that we see are illusory appearances like a dream sequence and the mistaken identity, considering the worldly objects to be real is really a reel and is responsible for all bondage.

Illusory appearances have two fold powers.

1. They can veil the reality.

2. they can project one thing as the other and on account of these powers, ignorance covers up the true nature of the self as the sun is eclipsed by a minor luminary of the sky.

Being veiled by such ignorance, man forgets his own self as being of the form of supreme bliss and starts thinking that he is unhappy and searches for pleasure from outside sources which push him more and more deep into the quagmire of desire and bondage. He identifies himself with the body, which is non-self and rises to binding fetters of lust, anger and like things.

Here please remember what Lord Krishna in Bahagavad Gita had described “Lust and anger leads to infatuation, loss of intellect and ultimate destruction”.

The same idea is emphasized in Viveka Chudamani. The self is the real nature of every being and is therefore present in every being. But due to wrong identification with the body and the senses makes one feel that he is different from the self, and such a feeling of the difference is the root cause of lust, jelousey and anger. And these base instincts push and pull a man into the boundless ocean of samsar, that is, cycle of birth and death.

Doubt may arise, if the self is but one and if its real nature is of supreme joy, how can it ever be veiled by lesser things? The answer is that ignorance and egoism are unfortunately endowed with such a power of veiling even the supreme self, until true knowledge dawns.

The mind and the senses owe their existence to the self, but project themselves as the true nature of the self. A wise man who realizes this truth controls the mind and the senses and basks in glory of the self, while the ignorant man, enslaved by the mind and senses, lose track and get entangled in the miseries of the worldly life. You will notice that ultimately the two powers of ignorance (illusory world) i.e. veiling and projecting (avarana and vikshepa) are responsible for the bondage because of which man superimposes the perishable body on the eternal self and undergoes countless cycles of births and deaths not knowing the ways and means of liberation.

Ignorance may start in a small way like a seed of a tree. But if it is allowed to sprout up, will lead to superimposition of the body on the self. The small plant of ignorance sprouted out of the seed is watered by worldly desires, the vital airs are the branches, the sense organs are the tips of those branches, the sense objects are the flowers, the momentary joys and sorrows are the fruits. The bird that sits on the tree and enjoys the fruits of action is the individual soul (jiva) The tree of worldly life projects itself seemingly impregnable but likely to get uprooted at any time. If a man feels that he does not have peace, it is he himself who is responsible for such a state. He has brought upon himself miseries by his own deeds and desires. He cannot blame any one else for his bondage, which is caused by his own ignorance.

Now the question arises how can the endless chain of births, deaths, desires, longings and bondage can be destroyed- only by real knowledge in the form of discrimination between the non-self and self, is capable of destroying the chain. Following the traditions, the mere knowledge will lead, to pride and egoism as said by Adi Sankaracharya, but the knowledge of the self coupled with grace of the lord, under THE GUIDANCE OF A GENUINE MASTER, can mitigate the sufferings of the mind, and this cannot be attained overnight and needs proper training, perfect cleansing of mind and practice under the guidance of a MASTER, and to achieve this study of the scriptures and performance of the prescribed duties and practices are recommended.

The mind purified by the scriptural study, performance of rites and duties without attachment of the results of such duties becomes fit to receive the knowledge of the self (Atmagnana), which alone can free one from the bondage of worldly life.

If one cultivates endurance towards this, makes sincere efforts, and surrenders to the MASTER, can certainly achieve and get freed from the bondage to attain liberation.

Each day that we live, we are striving for the middle path, the balanced life, the existence which finds its strength beyond joy and sorrow, beyond pleasure and pain, beyond light and darkness. But in order to arrive at this state of contemplative awareness, we must begin at the beginning, and this week our study is diet: physical, mental and emotional foods.


According to the ancient science of ayurveda, nature is a primordial force of life composed in three modes, qualities or principles of manifestation called gunas, meaning "strands" or "qualities." The three gunas are: sattva, "beingness;" rajas, "dynamism;" and tamas, "darkness." Sattva is tranquil energy, rajas is active energy and tamas is energy that is inert.


The nature of sattva is quiescent, rarefied, translucent, pervasive. The nature of rajas is movement, action, emotion. The nature of tamas is inertia, denseness, contraction, resistance and dissolution. The tamasic tendency is descending,odic and instinctive. The rajasic tendency is expanding, actinodic, intellectual. The sattvic tendency is ascending, actinic, superconscious. The three gunas are not separate entities, but varied dimensions or frequencies of the single, essential life force.

The food we eat has one or more of these qualities of energy and affects our mind, body and emotions accordingly. Hence, what we eat is important. Sattvic food is especially good for a contemplative life.

Tamasic foods include heavy meats, and foods that are spoiled, treated, processed or refined to the point where the natural values are no longer present. Tamasic foods make the mind dull; they tend to build up the basic odic energies of the body and the instinctive subconscious mind. Tamasic foods also imbue the astral body with heavy, odic force.

Rajasic foods include hot or spicy foods, spices and stimulants. These increase the odic heat of the physical and astral bodies and stimulate physical and mental activity. Sattvic foods include whole grains and legumes and fresh fruits and vegetables that grow above the ground. These foods help refine the astral and physical bodies, allowing the actinic, superconscious flow to permeate and invigorate the entire being.

People who are unfolding on the yoga path manifest the sattvic nature. Their path is one of peace and serenity. The rajasic nature is restless and manifests itself in physical and intellectual activities. It is predominant in the spirit of nationalism, sports and business competition, law enforcement and armed forces and other forms of aggressive activity. The tamasic nature is dull, fearful and heavy.


It is the instinctive mind in its negative state and leads to laziness, habitual living, physical and mental inertia. As it is by cultivating the rajasic nature that tamas is overcome, so it is by evolving into the pure sattvic nature that the continual ramification of rajas is transcended. It is important to maintain a balance of our several natures, but to attain toward the expression of the rajasic and sattvic natures in as great a degree as possible.

As you examine a menu closely, you will find that you may allow your inner guidance to tell you what is most appropriate to eat. The desire body of the conscious mind may want one type of food, but the inner body of the subsuperconscious may realize another is better for you. It is up to you to make the decision that will allow a creative balance in your diet. This awakens the inner willpower, that strength from within that gives the capacity for discrimination.

What did the World’s acclaimed and renowned Teacher Sri.Adi Sankaracharya said about “Work”

The secret of action is to get the dexterity by which works naturally causing bondage cease to have that effect. That dexterity consists in being even minded in pain and pleasure and such opposites.

It is not proper for one who has not known the self to give up the duties enjoined on him. It will be wrong if such a person were to think that he should not do his duty on the plea that work leads to bondage. For the reason that action sets the wheel of the world in motion, the person on whom a duty is enjoined should perform it. Before attaining the competence to the knowledge of the self, a man should engage in the path of action (karma yoga), which is his proper sphere, as that will lead him to attain to self-knowledge.

Path of action is the means of reaching the true knowledge of self and consists in the performance of unselfish work accompanied by the conquest of the dualities of the sensations as such heat and cold and pleasure and pain, and done in the spirit of worship of God. It is the Yoga of concentration and equality while doing work. Ordinarily, work brings about bondage in the form of merit and demerit , virtue and vice. By God's grace work ceases to bind when it is done as worship of God. Karma Yoga, therefore, is the means to liberation.

Until a man has attained the competence to follow the yoga of knowledge he should engage himself in work, as he is till then qualified only to follow the path of action.

WHAT IS YOUR CONCEPTION OF GOD?

Whatever conception you have of God, if it does not influence your daily life, conduct and interaction with others with Like & Love and if you do not experience inspiration from it, and if it is not felt universally necessary, then that conception is meaningless and useless.

God the infinite, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Divine, Merciful, Benevolent, personal etc. these conceptions are not sufficiently enough, compelling one to try to know Him and is of not for immediate and practical use of those conceptions in our busy and pre-occupied, rushing life.

If God is not conceived in a way that we cannot do with out Him in the meeting of wants, in our interaction with people, in earning money, in performing the most trifling or the highest of duties, then it is clear that one has not felt any reality and relationship between God and life- What a malady of living?

What one conceives of God should be of daily rather hourly, guidance. The very conception of God should stir and stir one to seek Him in the midst of our daily lives. This is what is meant by pragmatic, realistic, compelling and convincing conception of God. Take the God out of the sphere of belief and see it as truth in our daily life. To move a further step forward -bear in mind “GOD IS- REST IS NOT’ should be the spirit and attitude with which we should lead and live daily, and trust me: -

“In the hearts of men lives God.
He shall whisper to feel in your heart, the vibrations of
Wake up and walk up to the light ‘am leading you
To brighten up the sky and your lives always.”

Religion & Spirituality

According to Hindu religion, man has four goals in life. Various Hindu scriptures define the four goals as:-

1 Dharma,

2.Artha,

3.Kama

4.Moksha.


The four goals can be achieved only through Self realization. Hindus believe that equal importance has to be given to the four goals.


Dharma:- Is bit tricky to define as there is no exact English definition to it. It can be termed as a righteous way of living or social obligations.


Artha:- Can be defined as economic, social and political achievements – making of money or generating wealth.


Kama:- Can be defined as pleasurable pursuits including sexual and other enjoyments which are momentary. Fulfilment of desires.


Moksha:- Is spiritual liberation. Brahman realization.


For a balanced human life one has to give importance to the four goals. Giving too much importance to one particular goal will lead to imbalance. Getting stuck in one goal and ignoring other goals also leads to imbalance. All the four goals compliment each other.

One goal is also a guide to another goal. A person rooted in Dharma will clearly understand what is positive Kama and negative Kama (violence). He will understand the difference between positive wealth generation and greediness.

Dharma, Artha and Kama leads to Moksha – the final goal of each human being in Sanatana Dharma.


Many people find it difficult to understand Hinduism because of the numerous deities, scriptures and schools of thought. The difficulty is primarily due to the popular concept of God – that there is a God sitting somewhere up in the heavens and controlling the happenings on earth. In fact majority of Hindus too believe in a ‘God sitting above’ but the sole difference that a Hindu can choose a personal God or Gods from the numerous deities in the Hindu pantheon who are all the representative of the Supreme Being – Brahman.

Hinduism, the real name Sanatana Dharma, should be understood step by step. The confusion arises when people directly jumps into the various schools of thought and scriptures or by forming an opinion by standing in the outskirts.

First step, every Hindu begins by praying to a personal god or gods or goddess or goddesses. There is a goddess for learning, there is a god of wealth etc etc. Each individual’s personal god is a symbol of his/her highest ideals.

The whole confusion exists in this level. The numerous gods and goddesses exist in this step. The various schools of thoughts, numerous rituals, scriptures, the caste system, mythology, incarnations, festivals, prayers, debates, astrology, shlokas exist in this level. Most people in this level are fortune seekers – who want to lead a good life on the earth with the help of God. So they propitiate a personal god. The three important sects in Hindu religion – the Vaishnava (Vishnu), Shaivism (Shiva) and Shakti (Mother Goddess) is also found in this level.


Even majority of Hindus do not realize the concept of Brahman in this level. The personal god becomes the sole refuge for many. But the scriptures like:-

The Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads constantly remind people to think beyond and to find answers to questions like:-

Who am I? or Why do I suffer? Very few find time to find answers or even dare to enter the next domain.

The next level begins with contemplation. Some people reach at this level by questioning the very existence of God. Others by trying to find answers to questions like Who am I?

In this level the person realizes that I and God are one and therefore he studies more and more about Brahman. In this level he reads the scriptures, looks out for a Guru, and follows the teachings of ancient seers with the help and guidance of a Guru.

There are few souls who will get into the next level. They realize that there is only Brahman – I and Body will drop.

They will become silent or sing in praises of the numerous gods or concentrate on a single personal God. Reaching this level is very difficult. But very few return back from this level. They like solitude life or become wandering monks. They find the true meaning of ‘Thou Art That’ or everything is Brahman. There is no death or birth but mere transformation. But even in this level to a small degree the Brahman remains outside.

The next level is the highest level.

Nothing to write, nothing to talk because there is only ONE. Please note that these thoughts are my personal opinion and a reflection of what I have understood so far.


Definition of Spirituality

Spirituality is travelling the path of God. At the time of the big bang... all souls' at mans got separated and in the cosmic sojourn gathered impurities on the way. It is spirituality that gives us this true essence of life. How as a human being can one gain enlightenment and finally attain salvation (moksha). Spirituality is finally reaching the kingdom of God.


The ultimate goal of our soul is reaching the kingdom of God. It is only then it gets liberated from the cycle of birth and death forever. Human being is the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle. Only as a human being can one gain enlightenment and salvation.

Bhagavad Gita... the doctrine by Lord Krishna in Mahabharata in Hinduism gives all that is required on the spiritual path. The knower of Bhagavad Gita finally becomes the knower of all. Assimilating the pearls of wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita... one finally crosses the ocean of the worldly life.

Spirituality is not a small concept. How tough is the journey can be fathomed from the fact that in the last about 150 years only two persons gained enlightenment amongst 6500 million people living on Mother Earth. They were Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana.


Being spiritual means following the path towards God Almighty! Every human being is primarily spiritual. The fact that the body of a human being does not belong to one cannot be denied. It has been manifested by the spirit within... the soul residing within our heart. Our soul atman is the absolute owner of the body for the present manifestation. Everything we do... the fruits of our karma always belong to the soul within.


Spiritual Awakening.

If you truly desire travelling the spiritual path... you need learn the Wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita. The knower of Bhagavad Gita becomes the knower of all! Everything that is required to be known on the spiritual path is contained in Bhagavad Gita. One single Divine & Holy document... the sacred Bhagavad Gita teaches all right from the first manifestation as an amoeba to the last..

Spiritual Experience.

Spirituality is that subtle truth of life in absence of which no living being can survive. It is pure spirituality that makes one aware of the spiritual awakenings on the spiritual path. Reaching the end of life... gaining enlightenment is the cosmic goal fixed by God.


Spiritual Path

Enlightenment is pronounced enlightenment. It is never pronounced spiritual enlightenment for the reason that traveling the path of spirituality one gains enlightenment... never otherwise! No religious person ever gains enlightenment. One needs travel the spiritual path to gain enlightenment and finally salvation (moksha)./liberation &

On Upanishad................

Mandukya Upanishad.

Let’s know in brief on “Mandukya Upanishad.

Upanishad means:-

“Upa” means…………….. “Near”
“Ni” means……………..”Down”
“Shad” means……………..”To Sit”

To sum up, Sit near to the Guru to learn, practice and experience means and goals of (Sadhna) practice.

“Mandukya Upanishad” outlines the rich and divine philosophy of, and practice of “AUM” mantra.

It is also said and believed that cream of Vedas is Upanishad, and the cream of Upanishads is in the “Mandukya Upanishad”, therefore one can very well understand the importance and significance of Mandukya Upanishad.

The invocation verse of Mandukya Upanishad is very important, sublime, divine and rich and one can try and chant this verse daily to attain happiness and contendment. The invocation verse is re-produced below for the benefit of the readers.

Harivarasabam_Famous Hymn on Lord Ayyappa.

“'Harivarasanam'

was written by Kumbakudi Kulathur Iyer. In 1955, Swami Vimochananad recited this Ashtakam for the first time at Sabarimala. Sannidhanam, in early 1940s, 50s and 60s , was just wild jungle which few pilgrims visited. It is understood that a VR Gopala Menon of Alapuzha used to stay on at Sannidhanam even when the temple was closed. He built a shack and stayed there even when no human being was anywhere nearwhere nearby during those days when the temple was closed.

It was said that the wild animals never troubled him and that he used to feed the wildest of animals. Some years later, when Devaswom Board was formed, it seems ,he was asked to move out. He died as an orphan of the world at a tea estate at Vandiperiyar. He was the only companion to Thirumeni Eashwaran Nampoothiri (an old Mel Santhi of Sannidhanam) in those wild old days of solitude and dedication. Revered Menon used to recite `Harivarasanam' with all devotion. It was with
immense grief that Thirumeni Eashwaran Nampoothiri heard about the demise of Revered Menon. At that end of the pooja that day, when he was about to close the doors of the Sanctum Sanctorum, he remembered Revered Menon and recited 'Harivarasanam' starting a nostalgic tradition that remains unbroken to this day.


Harivarasanam is recited just prior to closing of the temple doors at night. As the final verses are being sung, all the assistant Santhis leave the Sanctum Sanctorum one by one. As the song ends, only the Mel Santhi is inside the Sreekoil. He extinguishes the lamps one by one and closes the doors for the night after the last lamp is extinguished.”
