LEARN.......LEARN........& KEEP LEARN

LEARN.......LEARN........& KEEP LEARN
If only you take the time to read these. I am sure that you'll come away with an enlightened perspective. The subjects covered affect us all, on a daily basis....................&..........They are written by Andy Rooney, a man who had the gift of saying so much with so few words. .........Enjoy.........and have a GREAT DAY................JK
I've learned ...That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.
I've learned .... That when you're in love, it shows.
I've learned .... That just one person saying to me, 'You've made my day!' makes my day.
I've learned .... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
I've learned .... That being kind is more important than being right.
I've learned .... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.
I've learned .... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.
I've learned .... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.
I've learned .... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.
I've learned .... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.
I've learned .... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.
I've learned .... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.
I've learned .... That money doesn't buy class.
I've learned .... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.
I've learned .... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.
I've learned .... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.
I've learned .... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
I've learned .... That love, not time, heals all wounds.
I've learned .... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
I've learned .... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile..
I've learned .... That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
I've learned ... That life is tough, but I'm tougher.
I've learned .... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.
I've learned .... That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I've learned .... That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.
I've learned .... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
I've learned ..... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
I've learned ..... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.
I've learned .... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.
I've learned .... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Tharpanam....... means “That offering which satisfies”

Tharpanam....... means “That offering which satisfies” ...........The Ritual and its  procedure every brahmin is expected to KNOW.

Tharpanam means “That offering which satisfies”. But what we mean by the word Tharpanam is the offering of water mixed with gingelly to the manes.(dead ancestors).Though we have several ancestors, this offering is addressed to three generations of father, grandfather and great grandfather along with their wives in our family and maternal grandfather, his father and grandfather along with their wives in our mothers birth family. Only those whose father is dead are eligible to do Tharpanam. If maternal grandfather is alive Tharpanam should not be done for his family but restricted to our family.

All the manes are supposed by our religion to live in the Pithru loka for some time and either be reborn as any being or go to lokas like deva loka, Vaikunta etc or even attain salvation by getting mixed with god. The pithru loka is populated by three group of pithru devas viz, Vasu, Rudra and Adhithya. These devas receive our oblations and make it reach to our manes wherever they are and in whichever form they are. The pithru loka is supposed to be on the unseen side of the moon. This portion gets exposed to sun on the new moon days. It is according to our concept lunch time for the people populating the pithru loka. These pithrus, since they have left the world are solely dependent on only their progeny to feed them. This feeding is done through Tharpanam. It is believed that if Tharpanam is not done out Pithru devas will curse us so that we may not have male descendents to offer tharpanam to us.

There are several type of tharpanams: -
1.Gunda tharpanam- the tharpanam which is done in the first ten days of death.

2.Brahma yagna tharpanam-This is the oblation supposed to be done daily to the devas, rishis and pithrus.

3.Parheni tharpanam- this is the tharpanam which is supposed to be done on the next day after annual sraddha. This at present is being done after sraddha on the same day, because the priest does not have time to come the next day. Here the tharpanam is offered only to ones pithru varga (paternal side)

4 The regular tharpanam which is supposed to be done on all amavasyas. Four Month beginnings viz mesha, karkidaga, thula and makara and eclipses. Our books have asked us to perform tharpanam on 96 days in a year but this is not being done nowadays.

Several acharyas have codified the method of tharpanam. Some of them are Apasthabha, Bodhayana, Drahyayana What is given below is the manthras and method of the Apasthabha sutra.of Yajur veda. There is slight differences in the sankalpam among Iyers and Iyengars. Both versions are given here.It is understood that the tharpanam for rik vedis is almost similar but that for Sanma Vedis is different. There is also differences brought about by local practice and family tradition. People are advised to follow their traditions strictly. They have precedence over what is written down here. For example in many families tharpanam is done without wearing Vibhuti or Namam but there are certain families who do tharpanam wearing these. Some people do avahanams of Pithrus on two koorchas. Some on one koorcha and some on spread durbhas..

There are several rules regarding tharpanam though many of them are not being followed by most of the people. They are: -

1.On the day of Tharpanam, till tharpanam is completed we are not supposed to drink/eat anything.

2.On the day of tharpanam, the daily rituals like Sandhya vandhana have to be first performed. Then before tharpanam one more bath has to be taken.

3.Wet cloth should not be worn during tharpanam nor is it right to wear cloth which was washed a day before and dried. The cloth has to be made wet the same day and dried. Pure white silk cloth can also be worn, but wearing this silk cloth you should not have eaten any food. If wet cloth is not dry, it should be seven times shaken dry in wind before wearing it.

4.Except the tharpanam during eclipse all other tharpanams are to be done after 12 noon. Considering the difficulty, our law givers have agreed that it can be done after 8.30 AM.

5.As mentioned earlier nothing should be eaten or drunk before performance of Tharpanam.

6.Oblations should be done with hand full of water and not drops or spoon full of water.

7.The water should be poured out using the space between the thumb and the four fingers.

8.Every time a pinch of black til has to be taken. Care should be taken not to take it using the thumb and the index finger.

9.Pithru tharpanam should always be done with poonal hanging from the right shoulder to the left side of the body.

10.The pavithram for pithru tharpanam should be made out of three durbha and the koorcham should be made of 7 or 9 durbhas.

11.We should preferably sit on seat made of durbha(durbhasanam) while doing tharpanam and in its absence put few durbhas on the place we are going to sit,

12.Silver vessels are prescribed for used during tharpanam. If not available copper vessels can be used. Under no circumstance should steel or other metal vessels are to be used.

13.Tharpanam should be done facing east or south. It is believed that it either should be done in our homes or in public holy places like shore of the river, sea active you happen to do it in the place belonging to someone else. We are supposed to compensate the owner of the property.

14.If Amavasya and the first of the month in which tharpanam has to be performed comes on the same day, then tharpanam for the sankramanam(first of the month) should be done.

Hindu calendar is broadly divided into two periods (Ayanas) of six months each comprising of six seasons (Ruthus) of two months each and twelve lunar/solar months of 30 days each (Maasas). The two broad periods around which all the spiritual and religious activities in Hindu philosophy rotate are referred to as Uttaraayana and Dakshinaayana. Sun is the focal point for all these activities and the movement or transit of Sun around the zodiac forms the basis for deciding a particular season or a month.

We have 12 houses in the zodiac (360 degrees) starting from Aries and ending with Pisces with each house comprising of 30 degrees. Sun moves one degree in a day of 24 hours and accordingly it takes 30 days for the Sun to move from one zodiac house to the other during which time we have 30 sittings and 30 settings of Sun. Movement of Sun from one zodiac house to the other is called as transit (Sankramana) of Sun and is denoted by the name of that particular zodiac house. Suppose, if it is Aries it is called as Mesha Sankramana, if it is Makara it is called as Makara Sankramana and if it is Karkataka it is called as Karkataka Sankramana so on and so forth.

What is Dakshinayana? What is its significance?

Broadly, Uttarayana or Dakshinayana comprising of six months each is the time taken by the Sun to travel from one house to the other during these periods. Starting from Makara (Capricorn) up to Mithuna (Gemini), the travel of Sun is called as Uttarayana and starting from Karkataka (Cancer) up to Dhanus (Sagittarius) it is known as Dakshinayana. We all know that Dakshina means South direction and Aayana means travel or movement. So accordingly the movement of Sun in the Southern direction is called as Dakshinayana. The time when the Sun leaves Mithuna Raasi (Gemini) and enters Karkataka Raasi (Cancer) is called as Karkataka Sankramana or Karkataka Sankranthi when the period of Uttarayana ends and Dakshinayana begins.

San means to come together and Kranthi means radical change. That means plenty of radical changes start taking place in the nature from this time onwards based on which the human activity depends. For example in case of Karkataka Sankramana that also marks the beginning of Dakshinayana coincides with the monsoon (rainy season) which is also a sowing season for crops when agricultural activities get activated. Similarly it also coincides with the winter season. Spiritually the sacred period for performing austerities and rituals Chaturmasam (Sravana to Karthika Masam) correspond during Dakshinayana.

These four months are said to be very dear and pleasing to Lord Sri Maha Vishnu when He enters into Yoga Nidra (Divine slumber) on Aashada Sukla Ekadasi day called Deva Sayani or Hari Sayani Ekadasi. He gets up from Yoga Nidra on Kartheeka Sukla Dwadasi day called Uttana Dwadasi. Thus, when the Lord SriManNarayana is in yoga-nidra it is befitting to set aside mundane activities and participate in special religious pursuits.
Majority of the major Hindu festivals like Naga Chaturthi, Vara Maha Lakshmi Vratha, Upakarma (Sravana Pournima), Krishnashtami, Ganesha Chaturthi, Rishi Panchami, Anantha Chaturdasi, SharanNavarathri (Devi Navarathri), Vijayadasami, Deepavali etc. occurs during Dakshinayana.

The period of Dakshinayana also coincides with Pitru Paksha the sacred time to perform sacred rites to the forefathers. It is believed and said that Uttarayana represents Devathas and Dakshinayana represents Pithrus. It is also said that Uttarayana is the day time and Dakshinayana is the night time for devathas. Dakshinayana is also called as Pitrayana. It is said and believed that Pitrus descend on Earth during the period of Dakshinayana awaiting their off-springs to perform sacred rites enabling them to attain better placement in the other worlds. Hence, lot of significance is given during this period for performing Pitru related activities.

Generally we observe major festivals taking place during Dakshinayana. That means to say that Dakshinayana is sacred for both the Devathas as well as Pitrus.

During the period of Dakshinayana night will be longer than the day and power of Sun gradually decreases as he moves from Karkataka to Dhanus. When Sun transits into Libra he becomes debilitated. Astrologically, Libra is the house of debilitation for Sun.

What is to be done on the day of Dakshinayana?

Generally during any parva kala sacred bath, prayer, japa, charity, and tarpana to forefathers are prescribed.

Tharpana should be given to all the fore fathers (Sarva Pithru) by those who are eligible with black sesame seeds (thil) during parva kala. If the day is coinciding with Ekadasi thithi tharpana should not be performed.

One should desist from sensual pleasures. Take only sattvik (vegetarian) food.

Charity can be given to the deserving in the form of Anna Dana (food charity), Thila Dana, and Vasthra Dana.

Worshiping Lord Vishnu, Lord Sri Krishna, Sun God, reciting Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram, Purusha Sooktha, Aaditya Hridayam on this day is preferred.

Generally transit of Sun is not considered auspicious as there will be certain disturbances in the organization of solar forces and such times are not recommended for taking up any new activities/ventures. On the contrary they are held to be auspicious for meditation, initiation into secret mantras and performance of certain religious rites which are held to purify both the body and soul.

Sun transit takes place every month but all transits are not considered as sacred ones. It is only when the transit coincides with the confluence or sandhi of two periods’ viz. Uttarayana and Dakshinayana it is known as Parva Kala and accordingly that particular moment becomes very sacred and celestial for performing certain austerities.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE

Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata was once traveling to Germany. As he stood there, at the door of his First Class Cabin in the Steam liner, he noticed a lot of activity on the lower deck of the Ship.
On inquiring, he learned that a great Indian Saint, Sri. Swami Vivekananda, was on board the same ship. Out of genuine respect and curiosity, J.N. Tata decided to pay a visit to the great saint.

Swami Vivekananda had, of course, heard about the respected industrialist. As the conversation grew, J.N. Tata explained that he was on his way to Germany. I have with me sacks of soil from various parts of India. I am taking these samples of soil to Germany. I wish to know if Iron can be extracted profitably from any of these districts in India" said J.N. Tata to the Saint.............................

To which Swami Vivekananda replied, "Well, Sir, Even if these sacks contain Iron-rich soil, do you honestly believe that the Germans will tell you the TRUTH? You must understand that none of the European Nations wish to see a Strong / Steel-Rich / Economically Independent India. The soil is probably rich in Iron-ore, but the sad truth is all you will get from your inquiries across Europe is Disbelief and Pessimistic reactions."

Needless to say, having interacted with several Europeans J.N. Tata knew this to be true. Swami Vivekananda continued, "Why don't you start an excellent, up-to-date Research Facility and College here in India? Why don't you train some good Indian youngsters to identify soil and conduct these tests and find ways of profitably extracting metals? It may seem like a wasteful, burdensome expenditure right now, but in the long run, it will save you many trips to Europe and you can have the assurance of knowing the Truth quickly - rather than taking multiple opinions due to Doubt".

As he could clearly sense J.N. Tata's mood was in acquiescence, he further elaborated, "Seek an audience with the Maharaja of Mysore H.R.H. Wodeyar. Though a subordinate of the British, he will definitely help you in every way he can. H.R.H. Wodeyar has been generous enough to sponsor my own trip to Chicago to attend the Parliament of Religions".

As soon as he returned to India, J.N. Tata headed straight for Mysore. And indeed, H.R.H. Chamraja Wodeyar did Not disappoint him at all. The King immediately granted 371 acres of land and other facilities for the setting up of the Research Facility and College that J.N. Tata had envisioned and it was named,   THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE.........I I Sc......in Bangalore, Also known to be Tata Institute.

The constitution of the Institute was approved by the Viceroy, Lord. MINTO and the necessary vesting order  to enable it to function was signed on 27th May,1909 and early in 1911 Maharaja of Mysore laid the foundation stone of the Institute. On 24th July, the first batch of students were admitted in the department of  General and Applied Chemistry under Mr. Norman Rudolf and Electro Technology.... under Mr. Alfred Hay, followed  by this Department of  Organic Chemistry was opened.  In the year 1956,With the establishment of the University Grant Commission, the Institute came under the purview of DEEMED UNIVERSITY.At the time of the inception of IISc in 1909, Morris Travers, co-worker of Sir William Ramsay in the discovery of  the noble  gases became IISC's First Director. For Travers this was a natural continuation of his work in the Institute since he had played  a role in its founding. The First Indian Director of the Indian Institute of Science was none other than the great science based Nobel Laureate Sir C.V.RAMAN. The IISc was the first institute to introduce Master's program in Engineering and has also started integrated Ph D program in Biological, Chemical, Physics and mathematical sciences for Science graduates. A Great institute of the world came into being as a result of three GREAT VISIONARIES of the GREAT INDIA.............J.N. Tata........Swami Vivekananda......&......H.R.H. Chamraja Wodeyar.................Let's pay our Reverence and Respects to these great souls.
