Saniswara Mantra is one of the most efficacious ones to chant in a way averting the ill effects of the Saade Sati (7½ year) period when an individual comes under the influence of Sani or Saturn. The name Sanidev comes from the root Sanischara meaning slow mover (the word ‘chara’ in Sanskrit means ‘movement). Astrologically, the planet of Sani or Saturn is the slowest moving one that resides for about 2½ years in a given zodiac sign. Therefore, the Saade Sati period in an individual’s life corresponds to the time taken by Saturn to move over the three zodiac signs including the one before yours and the one after yours (2½ X 3=7½). No individual can escape the adverse effects pronounced by the rule of Sani. However, the extent of adversities depends on every individual’s ‘Karma’ or the result of past deeds. When you feel dejected, depressed and demotivated due to the troubles you face during the Saade Sati period, you can resort to chanting the Sani Mantra which will do you so much good including boosting up your morale and confidence. Now to the Mantra and its meaning.

English Meaning of Sani Mantra....

Most Mantras in the Hindu tradition start with the primordial sound of ‘Aum’ that denotes Supreme Godhead.

Nilaanjana Samabhasam: The one who is resplendent (glowing) like a blue mountain [Nilanjana - Blue mountain, Sama - equal to that of, bhasma – glowing].

Ravi Putram: The son of Sun God (Ravi is one of the names of Sun God)

Yamagrajam: The elder brother (agraja) of Yama or the God of death

Chaya Martanda Sambhutam: One who is born (Sambhutam) to Chaya (shadow) and Martanda (One another name of Sun God)

Tam Namami Shanescharam (I bow down to the slow moving one)

Mode of chanting Shani Mantra......

Having taken bath and seated in a silent and serene place, you may contemplate on the image of Saniswara and recite this mantra. Focus on the wonderful and majestic form of Sahaniswara and chant this mantra in all devotion and faith. The ideal time to say this prayer is evening. You may also have an image or photograph of Lord Hanuman in front of you and offer flowers and worship to Hanuman which will equally please Saniswara. To have the best results, Sani Mantra is to be chanted 23,000 times. You may do this chanting in a phased manner. In a hectic schedule, you can chant the Sani mantra eight times during a particular cycle. Chanting for 108 times can be done whenever it is possible. Alternatively, you may keep chanting the mantra as you travel or when you are with your work.

Saniswara is always just and right in his judgment. He gives us only what we deserve out of our good and bad deeds. He does not punish us for what we have not done. He does not fail to give what we duly deserve out of our ‘Punya’ (merits earned by good deeds). However, when we chant Sani Mantra, we can minimize the adverse effects of our past deeds with the benign blessings of Saniswara.

Lord Saniswara.......

Lord Sani refers to planet Saturn and is a Sanskrit word. Sani is also one of the auspicious Navagraha as per the Hindu Astrology. Lord Sani is also the male deity who is a handsome looking man sitting on a vulture, Buffalo or a crow. He is Lord Sun's son.

Lord Sani’s Birth Story.....

As Lord Sani was in Chhaya’s womb she did severe penance sitting under the dazzling Sun to impress Lord Siva. The Divine intertwined and the celestial energies nurtured the baby in her womb and Lord Sani turned out to be a great devotee of Lord Siva. As Chhaya sat under the Sun, Lord Sani kept growing black in her womb – as he was born Lord Sun despised him being black and even rejected to accept him as his own. It is believed, it angered Lord Sani and his eyes cast upon his father, Lord Sun was charred as black too.

Many people mistake Lord Sani as cruel and easy to enrage, however, he is a very benevolent God - a strict one, though. He is generous and giving but demands discrepancy-free lifestyle and one should be just and fair in behaviour. He is God of Justice for a reason.

One day a very reputed Geologist happened to visit Kanchipuram to have darshan of Mahaswamigal. After enquiring about his family Swamigal asked him if he would do Him a favour. The geologist was overcome as he wondered what it was that he, a mere mortal could help the Saakshaat Deivam with. He immediately agreed. Mahaperiya asked him if he knew about Kaladi. The geologist replied that even a young child knew that it was the birth place of Adi Shankaracharyar. Periyava then told him that the river Purna ran through that place and that Shankarar's mother used to bathe in it every day. He then requested him to arrange for a diver to dive and take out sand from two different locations of the River Purna (presently called River Periyar).

One location, He said, should be where the River Purna enters Kerala before it diverts into entering Kaladi and the other location should be at Kaladi, where the river makes a small U-turn and reaches Shankarar's home itself. Swamigal asked him to use the technique of carbon dating to ascertain the age of the sand at these two locations. The geologist promised to return with the results at the earliest overjoyed that he could actually carry out the wishes of Mahaperiya himself.

The geologist performed the exercise as instructed by Swamigal and returned to the mattum. Periyava was waiting for him with a beatific smile on his face. He asked him about the results. The geologist presented the reports and said that the sand taken from the first location (where Purna enters Kerala) yielded an age of being more than 100,000 years whereas the sand from the second location in Kaladi (near Adi Shankarar's home) was close to about 2500 years!

Periyava explained the results - He said that Adi Shankara’s mother would bathe in the river every day. However, once, due to her infirmities, she fainted on the way home. Shankarar asked her to bathe henceforth in the water from their well, but she declined. Shankarar, unable to convince His mother, entreated Goddess Ganga through a song and requested her to follow His footsteps (Kal Adi) and flow near His ancestral house. No sooner did He do this than the Purna changed her course and started flowing just by His dwelling!! His mother was overjoyed and continued her ablutions by the river for the rest of her life on earth.

Periyava explained that this was the reason behind the differences in the carbon dating results. The river entering Kerala is about 100,000 years old, but the change in course at Kaladi happened only after Adi Shankarar's intervention.

Thus this confirmed that Adi Shankara was indeed born in the year 509 BC, which is 2500 years back!

Sree Rajarajeswari Gayatri Mantra.....

Aum rajeswaryi cha vidmahe sri bhavanyi cha dhiomahi tanno devi prachodayaat.

Sree Raja Rajeswari.... means the the lord of the lords, or the king of kings. In Hinduism, she is one of the highest aspects of Shakti or Parvathi, the consort of Shiva. Since she is the ruler of the universe, the name, Raja Rajeswari, aptly fits her. In the Lalitha Sahsranamam she is mentioned as an aspect of Sri Lalitha Tripura Sundari.

In the following Ashtakam ...... (a poem of praise) addressed to her, she is extolled by many names and described as eternally youthful, auspicious, the wealth of empires, ruler of the rulers, and the slayer of Dhumraakhsa, an asura.

In the images she is generally depcited as a beautiful and youthful Goddess, sitting on a golden throne, holding in her four hands an ankusa (a sharp object to control elephants), a pasa ( a rope denoting bondage), a sugarcane stalk, and a lotus. The last one also is held in the gestire of abhaya (assurance).

Devotees believe that when she is pleased by devotion, she grants power, authority, rulership, and wealth to her devotees and protects them from enemies. There are many temples of the Goddess in different parts of India, including Varanasi, where according to local legends, the Goddess is said to be very powerful, and devotees may often feel her presence in the temple.
