Some insight on Puranas.:-
Purana's are referred to as them fifth Veda in Upanishads. Smriti describes that puranas are commentaries on Vedas.
Tha Mahabaratha mentions that the puranas are stories of Gods,Goddesses,Devas and Sages that existed even before historic times.
The word Purana is said to have been derived from "Pura"(Old) "Nava" (New).
It means that the contents of the puranas are as good as new thoughts, though they existed even in the very olden days.
It was Sage Veda Vyasa who composed all the Puranas. Later, Bana,Kumarilla Bhatta and Sri. Adi Sankara highlighted the truth from various puranas Sankara highlighted the truth from various puranas.
Puranas are the main source of Indian thinking on subjects of social,cultural, religious,political and architectural. They are classified into three viz.:-
1. Those pertaining to Brahma.
2. " Vishnu.
3. " Siva.
In total there are 18 Puranas and the divisions are as follows:-

2.Brahmanda Purana.
3.Brahma Vaivarta Purana
4.Markandeya Purana
5.Bhavishya Purana.
6.Vamana Purana.
2.Puranas relating to Vishnu are:-
1.Vishnu Purana.
2.Bhagavadha Purana.
3.Narada Puraana.
4.Garuda Purana.
5.Padma Purana.
6.Varaha Purana.
3.Puranas relating to Siva are:-
1.Siva Purana.
2.Vayu Purana.
3.Skanda Purana.
4.Agni Purana.
5.Matsya Purana.
6.Kurma Purana.
